Who Values Expertise the Most?

My husband and I have had contractors build a few large structures for us over the years.  We’ve constructed a few smaller ones on our own.  We’ve done a lot to take care of our own health.  We’ve paid health care practitioners, dentists and orthodontists a lot of money as well.  We’ve organized a lot of data for filing income taxes, to eventually hand over to qualified tax professionals to add their expertise.  When it comes to circumstances involving complexities, the stakes get higher.  I would not have wanted to mess up my own surgery, could not have straightened my son’s teeth on my own, could not have built a house by myself, and flat out do not like income tax work.

My clients have made a lot of financial decisions on their own:  we all have to.  When we begin our adult lives, making good or bad financial decisions tends to affect us more incrementally than decisions made later in life.  Deciding how to invest an account with no commas in the balance is different than a six, seven or eight figure nest egg.    Rules that apply to adding money to retirement accounts are often less complicated than distribution rules and requirements.  Coming up with money to start a business is often less complicated than structuring the sale of one.  When decisions are larger and more complex, there is often more risk involved.  Like many areas in life, money and financial decisions require more expertise as complexities increase.  Sometimes, it can be easy to recognize the complication.  Other times, blind corners exist.  When should you consult an advisor?  When the stakes are high enough, people value expertise the most.
