Hindsight is 2020

I began my career in financial services in 1999….  what timing, with the tech wreck (aka:  dotcom bubble) that shortly followed causing financial markets to slide three years in a row, with the S&P cumulatively losing over 46% during the years of 2000 - 2002.  It was a great time to buy and to get investors, invested.  2003 – 2007 was good for markets and those who invested were rewarded.  Most of us remember 2008 with the steep decline of the financial markets and the great recession.    I still hear with vivid recollections of how 401(k)’s turned into 201(k)’s!

2020 was the year of uncertainty.  Among other things, investors were confused and uncertain as to why markets plummeted from February 20 – April 7 and then during the course of lock-down, shot back up in the months to follow.  Many feared covid would lead us to a great recession, or even a depression.  Wall Street and Main Street couldn’t have been more disconnected,  with Wall Street stocks profiting while Main Street retail businesses and restaurants suffered, some even fatally.  Investors who positioned their portfolios into the stocks of businesses who prospered during Covid were again rewarded.   Investors who sold out of fear during the stock market price declines, locked in their losses and may have regrets.  For them, we can say Hindsight is 2020.
